$50,000 Awarded to Teachers in SPUSD

Every year SPEF offers the Teacher Direct Grant Program to encourage the enhancement and enrichment of educational activities in order to develop and cultivate student achievement.

These grants are offered to help fund activities that are innovative and have a far-reaching effect. The Teacher Direct Grant Program is in place to further SPEF’s mission to support educational excellence in the public schools of South Pasadena through the operation of enrichment programs.

This year SPEF awarded $50.000 to teachers throughout all five schools.

California Young Reader Medal

Over the fall, our Teacher Direct Grants committee awarded each of our three elementary librarians a grant to run their schools’ annual California Young Reader Medal program. The librarians are working with teachers to read each class. Students eventually will vote on their favorite book.

The California Young Reader Medal program, established in 1974, introduces young readers in California to a variety of book genres and formats, gives them an opportunity to honor their favorite books and authors and develops and cultivates a love of recreational reading.
