SPEF offers Fall and Spring Afterschool classes at the three Elementary Schools and at SPMS for current SPUSD students.

For our youngest students, offerings include hour-long classes in Cooking, Soccer, Introduction to Chinese Culture and Introduction to Art. For older students, classes include Chess, Lego engineering and Art & Architecture.

Arroyo Vista Marengo Monterey Hills SPMS

Tuesdays:

Magic Academy (Grades 2-4) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Ever wonder how a Magician does a magic trick? This class unlocks some of the secrets to the techniques of magic. Students will gain skills in acting, comedy, and memorization that are essential to a magician’s performance. They will use a variety of normal household items such as cards, coins, cups & balls, and rope, and learn cool simple tricks!

Tennis (Grades 1-2) 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Our instructors from Kassirer Tennis will teach your student many skills for playing tennis! We set up portable nets and provide racquets and balls and bring tennis to the playground. The coaches emphasize sportsmanship and teamwork. Whether new to tennis or not, all students will find this class engaging and fun!

Wednesdays:

Chinese Culture (Grades K-5) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

This class is ideal for students, new and returning, who are interested in practicing Mandarin conversation skills and developing an appreciation for Chinese culture. Learn or refresh students’ counting skills, knowledge of symbols and key conversational phrases while studying Chinese culture.

Lego Robotics (Grades 3-5) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Build and program your own robots with Mrs. Reddy! Students will build Lego We-Do models with motors and sensors, and program the models. Students will explore various robotics challenges while developing skills in science, technology, and engineering, as well as language and literacy and creativity.

Next Generation Coding Workshop (Grades 3-6) 3:15 pm – 5:15 pm

A coding workshop that gives 3rd – 6th-grade students a first-look introduction to the world of computer science. Classes will be held at the SPHS Library. Students will develop an understanding of computer science and its real-life applications. NGCW will focus on exploring basic coding concepts through interactive hands-on activities and writing short programs, inspiring students to use computer science to turn their ideas into actual products and programs and showing students the world of computer science and its endless possibilities. NGCW instructors are passionate and knowledgeable SPHS Coding Club members as well as teachers in the field. Your students will be mentored by our SPHS students which allows them to get a glimpse at the possibilities of what is available for them at the High School.

Young Doctors (Grades K-3) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Come join our Jr. Medical School! Learn about CPR, first aid techniques, how to check blood pressure, pulse and respiration, and even how to apply a sling! Observe dissections and experience hands-on activities using all sorts of medical instruments including stethoscopes, thermometers, dissection tools, and more!

Thursdays:

Art Expressions (Grades 2-5) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Taught by Ms. Jayme, this spring we will be inspired by the art of Rene Magritte. This surrealist painter saw the world through a very unique perspective. His fluffy white clouds on a perfect blue sky, the man in the bolo hat, and his “this is not a pipe” paintings are all iconic. We will learn from his art, and the concept of surrealism, to create our own pieces of art. Students will be asked to draw from their own dreams and imagination to find iconography to use thought their own artwork, as Magritte did in many of his works.

Chess (Grades 2-5) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Beginners will learn the pieces and how to read the chess board. More advanced players will continue to build their playing strategies. All students will be challenged, and improve problem-solving and critical thinking!

Basketball (Grades 1-3) 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm

Kassirer Basketball is a FUN non-competitive, after-school enrichment class, run by a former professional athlete and taught by world-class basketball coaches. Each week, players will get to work on skills; play group games; and scrimmage! We teach professional quality fundamentals; the importance of teamwork, defense, communication and sportsmanship in a nurturing, safe environment.

RoboQ (Grades K-3) 1:15 pm – 2:45 pm

RoboQ specializes in STEAM education utilizing Electronics and Robotics. RoboQ transforms the classroom into a mobile tinkering lab, where students learn to build robots that draw, and robots that mix colors with a motor. Students will learn to build circuits with an LED, and make magnetic goo!

Video Game Design (Grades 2-4) 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm

Students will learn how to design and modify their own exciting arcade-style video games! They will learn how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in their games as they increase the difficulty level and add more features.

World Of Design (Grades 2-5) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Is your student curious about a career in graphic, urban or product design? In this class, students will use the Design Thinking Process to define, brainstorm and design potential solutions to real-world problems in different environments, such as the rainforest, Hollywood or Mars. Students will use sculpting, storyboarding, collage and mixed media techniques in this class. Join this new class, and take a journey into the World of Design!

Next Generation Coding Workshop (Grades 3-6) 3:15 pm – 5:15 pm

Mad Science (Grades 2-4) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Let’s Get Scientific! Take a walk on the wild side as kids explore zoology, the study of animals. We’ll spring into action with the science of energy. We’ll find out how telephones and radios work, and dive into the deep end and study ocean life. Mix things up with a little chemistry, then test out the laws of motion as we launch objects through the air. Science has never been more exciting! Mad Science offers hands-on, inquiry-based science classes with new content for returning students!

RoboQ (Grades 3-5) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Soccer (Grades K-2 & 3-5) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Coach Meghan and Emily of Brit West Soccer offer a developmentally appropriate soccer curriculum that teaches skills through fun games in the context of STEAM topics. Each class highlights a specific skill such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and game development, while also introducing a new STEAM concept. Run, jump, kick lots of goals and smile! With enough enrollees, we’ll be able to have a second coach, and students will be grouped with their peers – encourage your friends to sign up!

Ukelele (Grades K-2) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Students will learn the basics of the ukulele and practice songs arranged specifically for the instrument. Students will learn fundamental music skills, like reading and writing music. For a fun way to practice skills, students will play music games. Experienced ukulele players are welcome and will have a great time learning new songs and composing. You are welcome to bring your own instrument or borrow one from Ms. Ashley.

Young Directors (Grades 2-5) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

This unique and exciting class teaches the basics of entrepreneurship while giving students a hands-on opportunity to experience the film development cycle from storytelling and storyboarding, to casting and film production. Students celebrate their entrepreneurial accomplishments through the creation of passion-driven short films. At the end of the session, they will put on a film festival for the South Pasadena community.

Fridays:

Egghead Astronauts (Grades 2-4) 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm

Blast off this session with the Egghead Astronaut Crew as we explore the far reaches of our universe. Students will set off rockets, make huge chemical reactions, make lava slime, look for life and rocks on other planets, recycle water in space, and make out of this world volcanoes on their way to becoming astronauts! The best part? Students get to take home their experiment every week! Professor Egghead Science Academy offers the coolest science and engineering programs for girls and boys in grades K-3rd. At the end of the session, students will receive their own Egghead Astronaut Degree. Science has never been this cool!

Jazz & Hip Hop (Grades K-3) 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm

Instructors from Plaza Production and Funky Divas and Dudes will teach students current dance steps in jazz and hip-hop. The dance moves taught are age appropriate, and the teachers steer away from music and movement that is too mature. Students will improve strength, memory, stamina, and flexibility all while having a lot of fun! Join our final class performance!

This class will help your student improve their fine motor skills and stimulate their creativity. Practice traditional art techniques in painting and drawing, and have fun working on craft projects using materials, such as clay. We have new projects and lessons for returning students.

Egghead Astronauts (Grades 2-4) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Homework Helpers (Grades 1-5) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

This is an outstanding opportunity for students to do their English and/or Spanish homework. Our bilingual teachers will supervise students as they independently work on homework, and help correct errors and give direction in this group session. If homework has been completed, and time permits, the teacher will lead Spanish language reinforcement through different cultural activities.

Next Generation Coding Workshop (Grades 3-6) 3:15 pm – 5:15 pm

MHS Film Club (Grades 3-5) Wed & Friday Class 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

New this Spring! Join the MHS Film Club and learn the craft of filmmaking! We’ll learn the different roles, practice teamwork, and use our critical thinking skills as we identify ‘good’ content, and keep a movie journal. We’ll screen our works at the end of a session film festival.

Robotics Academy (Grades 3-6) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Learn to build robots using Lego and KIPR Robotics kits, and learn code to program your robots using a modified version of C. We will use math and science skills, and develop leadership, team building, critical thinking and creative problem solving, as we work on First Lego League and Botball competition level projects. Returning students will continue to focus on programming using new sensors and cameras. This is an extended session, with Fall classes from September through January, and Spring classes from February through May. Grade 6 students can select which campus they prefer to attend. Students may choose to compete in Robotics competitions.

Claymania (Grades 6-8) 2:45 pm – 4:15 pm

In this studio ceramics class, students are encouraged to explore their creative side while learning the basics of clay through hand-building. We’ll learn how to make functional and sculptural ceramics projects. All projects will be fired and glazed and may include decorative bowls, sculptural animals, and teapots.

Next Generation Coding Workshop (Grades 3-6) 3:15 pm – 5:15 pm

Robotics/CoderZ Academy (Grades 6-8) 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

SPMS Robotics Academy – Grades 6-8 CoderZ Students will participate in Realistic Gamified Simulations using integrated 3D simulations of educational robots within realistically rendered simulation scenes. Students can write, test and evaluate their code while solving problems from the real world. The visual programming interface removes the intimidation factor and lets students start with Blockly and advance to the Java code behind the blocks. This class will help inspire students to use computer science to turn their ideas into programs and will help expose students the world of computer science and its endless possibilities.

Fridays:

Chess (Grades 6-8) 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm

Afterschool FAQ’s

Supervision – Coaches/teachers will supervise enrolled students from school dismissal until the start of class.

Dismissal Gate – Teachers will walk students to the nominate Gate for dismissal, please be on time.

SPUSD Extended Daycare – Students registered with SPUSD Extended daycare should first check in with that program. We are currently working on protocols for students in Kindercare, but it looks like coaches/teachers collect from Kindercare as part of class.

Health – As SPEF classes are on SPUSD campuses, SPEF will follow SPUSD Covid-19 guidelines – don’t send your student to Afterschool class if ill.

Holidays – There are no classes on days when there is no school. In general, no classes are planned parent conference week. We will email you closer to early dismissal days if coaches/teachers are available to hold class at an earlier time to match dismissal.

Seating charts – Will be used in classroom-based classes if needed. Please remind your student that classrooms must be left clean. Items inside desks and on classroom benches, unless provided by your Afterschool teacher, are not to be used.

Current SPUSD students only – SPEF Afterschool classes are for current SPUSD students. Summer school and Camps are open to all.

Early Pickup/Absence from class – If you would like us to share with your Afterschool teacher that your student will be absent, please email registration@spef4kids.org and we will pass that information on. Also, if you need to pickup earlier than the scheduled end of class, we can help get that information to teachers, however this works best if planned ahead, as teachers aren’t always able to check their emails during class. Unfortunately, SPEF is not able to prorate for any class time your student is unable to attend. SPEF’s refund policy will apply.
